Application forms for the newly revised Joint Entrance Exam Main, 2013 will be available online from November 1. There will be no sale of paper application forms. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is conducting the exam in April next year, outlined additional details about the exam last week in a fresh document.

The JEE Main will determine entry into National Institutes of Technology and centrally-funded engineering colleges, and will be the first stage exam for entry into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). More than 10 lakh candidates are expected to appear for the exam next year.

The CBSE has also organised ‘facilitation centres’ to help candidates fill up their forms online. A list of 43 centres across the country has been announced (see box) and more will be added over the course of the next few weeks.

“The candidates can avail services of these centres free of cost,” said the new document. The JEE (Main) is  replacing the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).

The exam in offline mode will be held on April 7 next year. The dates for the online mode are yet to be announced.

The document further clarifies that blind candidates will be allowed the help of writers and an hour of extra time (race against time phrase meaning) to write the paper.

The new document has also specified that a candidate will be allowed three consecutive attempts for the JEE (Main), and that the test will be an objective-type test with negative marking for incorrect answers.

Details of the syllabus are available on the CBSE website. The top 1.5 lakh candidates who clear the JEE (Main) will be able to sit for the JEE (Advanced), which will be conducted by the IITs.

Candidates, who wish to improve their performance in the board exam, following the announcement of the new format, will have to appear for exams in all the subjects again.
